Estimating Quilting Cost
At It Had To Be Sew, our longarm quilting services start at just 0.025 cents per square inch, with a minimum charge of $50.
To calculate your total cost, simply multiply the width by the height of your quilt to determine the square inches. Then, multiply this number by 0.025 cents, for basic edge to edge designs. Enjoy affordable and precise quilting services tailored to your quilt's dimensions. More intricate, or densely stitched, designs range from 0.03 to 0.045 cents per square inch.
Example:
Your quilt top is 55 inches x 72 inches
55 in x 72 in = 3,960 square inches
Cost of longarm quilting = 3,690 sq in x $0.025 = $92.25
Choosing your thread
When selecting a thread color for your quilting stitches, we prioritize finding the perfect balance between subtlety and visibility, ensuring a seamless blend across the varied fabrics in your quilt top. At It Had To Be Sew, we exclusively utilize Glide thread by Fil-tec for our quilting services. Experience exceptional craftsmanship with our premium threads, meticulously chosen for optimal results.
Batting and Backing
At It Had To Be Sew, you have the flexibility to provide your own batting and backing fabric, or utilize ours for your quilting needs. For optimal results, it's crucial that the top, batting, and backing layers remain separate, without being glued or basted/tacked together. Additionally, the backing and batting should exceed the top's dimensions by a minimum of 12 inches on both the length and width of your quilt top.
Example: Your quilt top is 55 inches x 72 inches - Your backing should be 67 inches x 84 inches or larger.
Quilt Trimming
At It Had To Be Sew, we offer expert trimming and squaring of your quilts after quilting, whether or not we bind them. For just $10.00 per quilt, you can have your quilt perfectly trimmed and squared. We understand the value of your materials, so any trimmed fabric and batting wider than 2 inches can be returned to you upon request. Rest assured, your quilt will be handled with the utmost care and precision.
Quilt Binding
At It Had To Be Sew, we offer convenient binding options tailored to your preferences. You can choose to have your binding expertly stitched down on the front, making it ready for you to complete hand stitching to the back. Alternatively, we can complete the binding entirely by machine. In this case, we attach it securely to the quilt stitching through the front and back of the binding. Hand Stitched binding is available if desired.
You don't even need to have us quilt your project to utilize our binding service! We've collaborated with many clients who simply needed help finishing their quilts by tackling the binding.

Customer Supplied Binding
At It Had To Be Sew, you have the choice to create the binding yourself or send us the necessary yardage, and we'll expertly craft the binding for you for an additional fee. There's flexibility in the type of binding you can choose. Our preferred option is the French Fold method using 2.5” straight cut strips joined on a 45 degree angle. While we're open to variations like 2.25” cut strips, bias binding, or even backing turned to the front, these alternatives might incur extra charges based on the complexity. Please verify any deviations from our standard preference to plan your quilting project effectively.
